Greg Barats is president and chief executive officer of HSB Group Inc., parent company of The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company with insurance and engineering affiliates worldwide. He assumed responsibility for this position in September 2011. He serves on the Munich Re America Property and Casualty Executive Board for U.S. operations, the boards of Munich Re Weather and Commodity Risk Holding Inc. and Munich Re Trading LLC, and on the boards of various HSB affiliated corporations. Effective November, 2016, Mr. Barats additionally assumed responsibility for Munich Re’s overall Commercial/Industrial IoT strategy, including HSB.
He was appointed executive vice president of HSB engineering services in 2008 and assumed additional responsibilities for HSB’s inspection services, engineering risk management and insurance risk analysis operations in 2009.
Mr. Barats also is chairman of HSB Solomon Associates, LLC, an energy management consulting company that offers performance improvement services for the petroleum refining, petrochemical and power generation sectors worldwide. He has held this position since 2002.
While at HSB, Mr. Barats has developed and holds seven U.S. business-method patents. He also started HSB’s strategic corporation venture fund, based in San Francisco, investing in early to late stage innovation that drives HSB’s long term vision and strategy.
During his 30 year career, Mr. Barats co-founded two companies and has held executive management positions within Munich Re, HSB and AIG. At AIG he was senior vice president and also served as chairman of SAIGTAS, a Shanghai-based subsidiary of AIG that provides engineering consulting services to companies in China.
Prior to his tenure at AIG, Mr. Barats co-founded Applied Earth Technology Inc., a physical science research firm focused on the energy sector and Applied Environmental Technology Inc., specializing in environmental assessment and remediation in the San Francisco region. He began his career as a research scientist for the United States Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California.
Mr. Barats holds a bachelor’s of science degree in geology and a master’s degree in business administration with emphasis in finance from Southern Oregon University.
,p>Mr. Barats is a member of the Board of Governors of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI). He also serves on the MetroHartford Alliance Connecticut Insurance and Financial Services board, the board of the Connecticut Science Center and board of directors of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association. He was the 2015 United Way Campaign Chair for Central and Northeastern Connecticut and continues in that role in 2016.
